Mental Health Awareness
Michael Sweetney was born in Oxon Hill, Maryland where he attended Oxon Hill High School where he won a state Championship. He went on to play at Georgetown University for 3 years.
He was selected ninth overall in the 2003 NBA draft by the New York Knicks. He went on to play two years in New York and two years for the Chicago Bulls. He left the game for a while and returned to playing basketball overseas in a number of different countries.
After the loss of his father Michael began suffering from depression. For years he suffered silently until he finally sought the help he needed. Now he works tirelessly to help others especially teens who suffer.
He played in the inaugural season of Ice Cubes BIG 3 Tournament with the Allen Iverson led 3’s Company.
He has since gone on to speak around the world from fortune 500 hundred companies to local youth centers about the importance of mental health issues. He also runs basketball camps in and around the New York City area.
He is the newest member on the New Horizon team as their outreach specialist. He is able to reach out and have a hands one effect on changing the stigma in the community. He is a husband to his wife of 13 years India and father of three, Ayden, Grayson and Stella.
